To convert to a REAL ID driver’s license or state ID, visit a Secretary of State office and provide the following documents:

  • Your current Michigan driver’s license or ID
  • A name-change document, if your name is different from what is on your legal presence document
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or proof of legal presence

There’s no additional fee to turn a license or state ID card into a standard REAL ID if it’s done during your normal renewal time; otherwise a duplicate card fee of $9 or $10 will be charged.
